Monitoring and Training in the Amazon

2011
Start
Verthic began its operations in the Amazon region with the Executive Planning of the Basic Environmental Project – Indigenous Component, part of the environmental licensing process for the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant.

For over 10 years, Verthic has implemented a series of regional local development programs and projects targeting the indigenous peoples of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) area of influence in Pará. Projects include mitigating and compensating for impacts in the areas of Indigenous School Education, Indigenous Health, Indigenous Territorial Management, Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage, Capacity building and Institutional Strengthening of local associations, Productive Activities for subsistence and income generation, Communication for Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations, and Environmental Supervision.
Implementation of nurseries for the annual production of 1 million seedlings of native forest species, with identification and monitoring of matrices and seed collection.
Implementation of a vegetation characterization project, natural regeneration monitoring, pressure/conflict mapping, and training in Serra do Pardo National Park and the Xingu River Extractive Reserve, both conservation units in the state of Pará, totaling over 20,000 hectares. The project is part of the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Project, funded by the World Bank's Global Environmental Facility (GEF), and implemented in partnership with Conservation International – Brazil and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), part of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.
2012
Monitoring Works in the Amazon
Development of a database with infrastructure works in the Amazon region, in the most diverse stages and sectors, as a tool for monitoring investments and socio-environmental impacts, with the Amazon Network of Georeferenced Socio-Environmental Information – RAISG, funded by the Avina Foundation, as a client.
Projects on the Negro River
Evaluation of the partnership between the Rainforest Foundation of Norway (RFN) and the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of the Rio Negro (FOIRN), based on projects of Institutional Strengthening, Education, Territorial Management and Economic Alternatives for the peoples of the upper and middle Rio Negro region, in the state of Amazonas.
ISA Restructuring
Conducting the diagnosis, analysis and recommendations for the administrative and financial restructuring of the Socio-Environmental Institute - ISA, a leading institution in the socio-environmental field and which at the time had more than 100 projects and 150 employees divided between 8 offices in Brazil.
Verthic's work is guided by a focus on developing the protagonism and autonomy of the populations it serves. It utilizes participatory diagnostic tools, potential analysis, and project development and management, with clear definitions of general and specific objectives, scope, methodology, concepts and definitions, legal and regulatory frameworks, documentary references, activities, budget, schedule, outcomes and outputs.
To this end, Verthic relies on a dedicated specialized team and an extensive network of consultants and associates from diverse fields, such as forestry engineering, fisheries engineering, agricultural engineering, anthropology, sociology, biology, environmental management, law, ecology, economics, geography, cartography, and others. This diversity allows the company to operate in a cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary manner, making its range of activities in the socio-environmental field extremely broad and comprehensive.
